PACE: Europe underestimates level of crisis in Ukraine

20 november 2014 | 10:23

The situation in eastern Ukraine is much more serious than it is thought in Western Europe.

Because of ATO, crisis in Ukraine is much bigger than it is thought
Rapporteur of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) on the humanitarian consequences of the crisis in Ukraine Jim Sheridan argues that the EU underestimates the level of the crisis in Ukraine. This is stated in the press service of the PACE.

He notes that Ukraine is facing a severe humanitarian crisis because of the conflict in the Donbas and that the extent and severity of this crisis is not fully estimated in Western Europe.

According to him, the Ukrainian government itself is just beginning to realize the scope and consequences of the tragedy of the Donbas. However, he welcomed "the efforts of the authorities and the remarkable generosity and solidarity of the people and civil society, reacting to an emergency situation."

He believes that the first step to resolve the crisis should be a ceasefire.

However, more than 100 Ukrainian military have already been killed during two months of "truce" in Donbas.
