Ukraine to buy nuclear fuel from Russia until 2017

State-owned Energoatom and the Russian Fuel Company TVEL signed an additional agreement on deliveries of Russian nuclear fuel for Ukrainian nuclear power plants in 2015-2016. 

"We have signed the supplementary agreement which will provide the supply of nuclear fuel in 2015-2016," told to reporters the security director of Energoatom Danko Biley on Tuesday, on Nov. 25.

At the same time the official reminds that in addition to Russian gas, the South-Ukrainian NPP uses also American fuel of Westinghouse company.

Energoatom is the operator of all four operating nuclear power plants in Ukraine. It operates 15 power units equipped with water energetic reactors of the total installed capacity of 13.835 GW.

Ukraine needs to reduce dependence on Russian nuclear fuel, wrote in an article in ZN.UA expert on energy issues, Mykhailo Honchar. According to him, in the conditions of the Russian aggression against Ukraine, energy survival in winter 2014-2015 is one of the key issues. In particular, this applies to the situation in the nuclear power industry.
